Monticello Daffodils in Charlottesville, Virginia

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Monticello Daffodils_MAR4931_32, originally uploaded by macjammer.

Photographer macjammer tells us about this March 21, 2010 image: The picture was taken at Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson in Charlottesville VA. It is a composite of two images – one that has the daffodils in sharp focus and a second that has the house in sharp focus. The gardeners at Monticello maintain year round plantings of seasonal flowers. The next to bloom will be tulips, which are spectacular.

For more Monticello photos generally, including an aerial from a hot air balloon, see macjammer’s Monticello set.

Daffodils are definitely out in Virginia – macjammer has also posted two beautiful daffodil photos from the University of Virginia Pavilion here and here.

It is a 4 mile drive through the daffodil gardens with several spots to pull over and take photos. It is free to the public and definitely worth the trip.

Rows and Rows in Skagit Valley, Washington

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

rows and rows, originally uploaded by Dean Forbes.

Photographer Dean Forbes tells us about this mellow yellow image: The image was taken in the Skagit Valley of Washington state on March 20. I don’t know the name of the variety. I used a 80-200mm telephoto zoom lens set at 80mm and cropped the image to eliminate an obvious horizon to help give the “endless” effect.

The area farms grow daffodils and tulips for the cut flower industry and are a major tourist draw. The valley is about an hour north of Seattle.

Here is information about the Skagit Valley blooms, from our website Daffodil Festivals Fields and Gardens 2010, with a link to the Skagit Valley Bulb Festival hotline.

Photographer laujhil tells us about this March 22, 2010 image: It was taken in Regents Park, London, UK. Daffodils and Barn Near Junction City, Oregon

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

daffodils and barn, originally uploaded by Sideshow Bruce.

Photographer Sideshow Bruce tells us about this March 20, 2010 image: I took the picture on our way to the 2010 Daffodil Festival held at the Long Tom Grange, west of Junction City, Oregon. www.junctioncity.com/news/daffodils/index.htm We were just headed down the road and the setting with the barn, flowers, and sun caught our eye, so we had to stop and take a picture. Curiously, this was one of the places that still had good bloom – most were past their prime. This year has been unusually warm and most of the daffodils have been blooming for quite some time already. I can’t recall the exact date, but I had been seeing some blooming around our neighborhood since early February.

Daffodil Fields in La Conner, Washington

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Overview of some Daffodil fields, originally uploaded by Ursula Haigh.

Photographer Ursula Haigh tells us about this March 18, 2010 image, which is geotagged on the flickr page: It’s hard to tell the type, since this photo was taken from Best Road on our way to La Conner, WA, but the unmistakable colour is proof that these are the beginning of many more daffodils & narcissus that will fill the Skagit Valley bulb fields prior to the arrival of the tulips later this month!

According to the Skagit Valley Bulb Festival hotline, the Daffodils are about a month ahead of schedule due to the unseasonably warm weather. They said the tulips are up and should be in colour at the end of March. If you plan to attend ~ don’t delay the beauty in these lovely fields is fleeting!

Here’s a photo set posted by Ursula Haigh titled “Road Trip to Skagit Valley”, if you would like to see more photos of the daffodil fields and the La Conner area.

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Daffodils Chasing Butterfly, originally uploaded by terrijane01.

Photographer terrijane01 tells us about this lively image taken on March 17, 2010: The daffodil photos were taken at St. Placid’s Priory in Lacey, Washington. St. Placid’s is a Benedictine Monastery for nuns. I am not a nun, but I was taking a retreat there.

These daffodils were growing in the garden that the nuns keep. The last time I was here, the garden was overflowing with vivid summer colors. I was not expecting to see the beautiful yellows of the daffodils when I went there on a retreat in mid-March. Most of the garden was barren.

Muffins and Daffs in Falmouth, Cornwall, England

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Muffins and Daffs, originally uploaded by Squidge:).

We do not include indoor compositions very often, but this delicious photo caught our eye, er stomach. We love the yellow of the corn muffins, foretelling the yellow of the daffodils still to bloom.

Photographer Squidge:) tells us about this image, taken on March 11, 2010: The photo was taken in my kitchen in Falmouth, Cornwall, England. It was my day off and I’d spent the day doing some shopping and lots of cooking including the sweetcorn muffins that are also in the shot. Daffodils are late coming in England this year because it’s been so cold but luckily for me Cornwall is warmer than the rest of the country so our daffs are out now :)

On the flickr page, Squidge:) says: Couldn’t resist buying some daffodils today… it’s been so sunny this week, feels like spring is here at last!

Photographer Nick Boren Photography tells us about this March 6, 2010 image: The image was taken near Brownsville Oregon in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Western Oregon. These daffodils that you see in this image are the very first ones to show themselves in the valley and they were growing wild in a farmers field by that old oak tree you see off in the distance.

I have other daffodil images that were captured previously, if you want to have a look at them. They are in my landscape set.

I love living in Vancouver, and what a beautiful grouping of daffodils.

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Spring is Here!, originally uploaded by Sienna62.

Photographer Sienna62 tells us about this March 14, 2010 image: This picture was taken during the “Dallas Blooms” festival at the Dallas Arboretum. In the early weeks of the festival which is when this picture was taken, daffodils and hycacinth rule the garden in quantities that leave you speechless. As the days of the festival go by tulips and azalea lead the pack and bloom in a crescendo of color. It is quite a sight to see.

Kites Eye View in Skagit Valley, Washington

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

IMG_0610 Daffodils and Road, with Irrigation Canal, originally uploaded by cookinghamus.

Photographer cookinghamus tells us about this March 6, 2010 image and his technique using a kite and camera: This photo was taken via camera lofted by a kite, this technique is called Kite Aerial Photography, or KAP. The technique is this: You launch a kite (some kites are much better for this than others). When the kite reaches a stable height, you attach a camera to the kite string by means of a device called a picavet cross. The camera attaches to a harness located beneath the picavet cross, and stays relatively stable, and pointed in the same direction. Then you simply let out more string, and the camera gains altitude. I have modified the camera I shoot with, I’ve caused it to take photos at 5 second intervals. The day I shot that, I had the camera in the air for approximately an hour and a half, with a total of about 590 images. The technical details on the kite and camera are listed in the description of the image. (“Rok” is short for Rokkaku, a kind of Japanese fighting kite: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rokkaku_dako )

The image was taken on Saturday, March 6, in the Skagit Valley. The nearest town is Mt Vernon, although this particular shot may very well have been closer to La Conner. The tulip field was on the corner of McLean and Best Roads, the map is here: maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=best+and+mclean+road,+mt+vernon+wa&sll=47.60621,-122.332071&sspn=0.812012,1.237335&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Best+Rd+%26+McLean+Rd,+Mt+Vernon,+Skagit,+Washington+98273&ll=48.420344,-122.443485&spn=0.024978,0.038667&z=15

The field also appears on this map: www.tulips.com/bloommap.cfm It was field #11. I know relatively little about daffodil varieties, according to that website, the daffodils planted are Dutch Master and Flower Carpet. I have no idea which of those I photographed.

I have been doing Kite Aerial Photography for about a year, the skagit valley daffodils and tulips were the reason I first decided to attempt KAP. You may be interested in the other photos I took that day, which can be found here:

Daffodils at Arlie Gardens in Wilmington, North Carolina

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

daffodils, originally uploaded by oakstudiosofdesign.

Photographer oakstudiosofdesign tells us about this majestic scene, taken on March 13, 2010: Daffodils have always been one of my favs. After living in Forida for many years, where they don’t really grow, we moved to an area where they do grow. I was so excited to see them popping up everywhere! This was the largest grouping I had come across and I loved the white and yellow blooms. They bring back memories of growing up in New Hampshire.

We took the pic in Wilmington, NC at Arlie Gardens: www.airliegardens.org

We explored some of the gardens but will be going back again soon to see what is blooming later in the spring.

Alive! in North Wales

Saturday, March 20th, 2010
Alive!, originally uploaded by notcatherinezea.

Photographer notcatherinezeta tells us about this March 6, 2010 image (“First Gardening Day of the Year”): These daffodils are in my garden in North Wales. Usually they would have bloomed by now, but the unusually freezing cold weather (unusual for us) has put these daffodils a few weeks behind.

Usually by this time the whole of North Wales is bright yellow with daffodils, But not this year, not yet.

The Daffodils is Riz in Sarnia, Ontario

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Spring Is Sprung, The Daffodils Is Riz, originally uploaded by Pixelblender.

Photographer Pixelblender tells us about this March 12, 2010 image: These daffodils are just outside my front door in Sarnia, Ontario. We’re right at the bottom tip of Lake Huron and so, almost as far south as you can go in Canada. Unfortunately I can’t tell you much about the Daffodils themselves as they are very well established in this location and other than being a basic yellow on yellow species, their actual identity is long lost in the canyons of my mind. Although these were the first of our spring bulbs to emerge on the sunny southern exposure of our home, they have since been joined by numerous others waiting to bloom in the near future.

Daffodils at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Friday, March 19th, 2010

goddess of the flowers, originally uploaded by kimberly alcibiade.

Photographer kimberly alcibiade tells us about this lovely March 10, 2010 image: The photo was taken at Phipps Conservatory in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh PA. It was the 1st day of this years spring flower show. I am a member of Phipps & it never ceases to amaze me how they transform the place from season to season & show to show. This spring show they will be having the Pittsburgh Opera in from time to time. I encourage anyone near Pittsburgh to visit. There is a large Chihuly glass chandelier and some Frabel glass from past exhibits to see. As for the display, I really do not know much about it …. I do know that it was beautiful.
