Daffodil Woods in Stubbington, England

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Daffodil Woods, originally uploaded by GranDadWoof.

Photographer GranDadWoof tells us about this March 14, 2009 image: It was shot with a Nikon D300 using a beautiful old Nikon 200mm f/4 Ai-S manual-focus lens in a small wood adjacent to Crofton Cemetary – which is next to the original churchyard of Crofton Old Church, Stubbington, Hampshire, UK.

The daffodils grow wild there and though I am unable to tell what variety they are. they do appear to be a domestic variety that must have escaped from captivity :-)

The daffs are in a field of olive trees between the Observatory and the house where Galileo was held in house arrest. The picture was taken on March 6th. I’ve lived with Sonoran Desert for the past twenty years and so it is wonderful to be back in Europe to see daffs welcome in Spring.

These daffodils were made by Graphic Design Students from the University of the Arts, London, including myself. We are called the Magpie Collective.

(Usually they identify their bulbs, but they got a shipment of mixed random ones.)

The Wait is Almost Over in Hull, England

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

The Wait is almost over, originally uploaded by keithhull.

Photographer keithhull tells us about this March 3, 2009 photo: Taken in my garden in the City of Hull England. Not sure what type of flower. I planted hundreds in the garden many different species but cannot remember which this one is.

I know this shot lacks colour and you will soon see many shots of glorious yellow daffodils. I wanted to catch the period just before they fully flower. Slowly emerging from the winter ground they are almost ready to explode into colour…….but we must be patient … any day now. Perhaps the greatest pleasure of being a gardener is anticipation.

First Daffodils and Blackbird in Somerset, England

Spring has Sprung! Our blackbirds are nesting, originally uploaded by Mukumbura.

Snowy Daffodils in Greenville, South Carolina

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

3-2-09 – Park daffodils and snow, originally uploaded by jennymunro.

Photographer jennymunro tells us about this image: I took the picture in Falls Park in downtown Greenville, S.C. The park is built around the Reedy River and the falls, which are just yards off Main Street. The daffodils have been out for a couple of weeks. Then last week, we had snow on March 1. I took this picture on March 2, the next day, when the snow had melted some.

All I know about the daffodils is that they are planted by the city of Greenville, which operates the park. And they are always one of the first harbingers of spring for me. Since I work just a block from the park, I watch the flowers come and go.

Spring and winter – daffodils and snow. That’s what happens when seasons are about to change. And it happens often in the Southeast. Winter often doesn’t really show up until March or so.

Daffodil Bud in Richmond, British Columbia

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Backlit Daffodil Bud, originally uploaded by LIBRRIAN.

Photographer LIBRRIAN tells us about this March 1, 2009 image: I plan to take more shots as that particular blossom opens up. I have been following this plant since it came out of the ground. We have several different varieties in the garden and I am waiting to be surprised when it blooms.

I will figure out how to geotag this image, so you can see the exact co-ordinates. This plant is growing in the front garden of my co-op in Richmond, BC, on the west coast of Canada. The climate here is very mild in winter, however, this year we have had quite a lot of snow. The TV weatherman has forecast snow for Saturday, and if we get it, I will shoot that, too.

You can see the developing bloom in there!

We followed up with a question about the backlighting, and here is what LIBBRIAN tells us: Yes, the sun is behind the bud, because I wanted to see how full the sepals were. Today, they are nearly full and the bud is beginning to swell, just a little.

Snowy daffodils in Anderson, South Carolina

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Hanging its head, originally uploaded by froglover.1979.

Photographer froglover.1979 tells us this about this snow and daffodils photo: Taken in Anderson, SC USA. These daffodils have been blooming in my front yard for several years. On this day, March 1, we had a snow storm. These are quite rare in the south. We got 6 inches of snow in about a 15 hour period. My daffodils were quite droopy from the wet snow. Can’t tell you much about the variety.

Oktronic’s photostream has many recent photos of Filoli 2009, including several more daffodils photos. We couldn’t decide which to post, so we closed our eyes and clicked.

Daffodils on the Mendocino Coast

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Daffodils at the Coast, originally uploaded by John F. Hughes.

Photographer John F. Hughes tells us about this perfect Northern California day: The photo was taken on the Mendocino Coast, 12 miles north of the town of Mendocino, about 175 miles North of San Francisco. The daffodils are on a cliff top, near the Pacific Star Winery. The day that the photo was taken, February 25, 2009, was wet and windy – very typical for this time of year and this location. Immediately behind the daffodils in the photo, the cliff drops nearly 100 feet into the Pacific Ocean. This is a tough environment for daffodils, but these little guys were up to the challenge. They look like they are huddling together against the stormy weather.

We’re always partial to photos of daffodils and ocean, the wilder the better.

Cades Cove Daffodils in Great Smoky Mountains

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Cades Cove Daffodils, originally uploaded by Deb Campbell.

Photographer Deb Campbell reports on these new daffodils in East Tennessee: It was taken on 2/26/2009 in Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Church in the background is one of 3 still standing in the Cove. It is the Cades Cove Methodist Church. As you drive around the 11 mile loop road in the cove you will see sections of daffodils planted here and there. It is said that where you see these daffodils, a homestead once probably stood there, as the early settlers planted them around their cabins. As you probably know, these daffodils are often called jonquils or buttercups down here in the south.

See the first comment on the flickr page for a photo of daffodils in the same location from 1985.

Oh, and a snow report! We asked if the daffodils are now under snow. Here is the status from yesterday (March 4): There is no snow in the cove right now. I was up toward Gatlinburg earlier today and there was snow but melting quickly as it’s in the 50′s here today and will be 70 by Friday, I think.

First of Many in County Westmeath, Ireland

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

The first of many, originally uploaded by seikinsou.

Photographer seikinsou writes to us about this dramatic landscape photographed on February 28, 2009: The photo is taken in a private garden in County Westmeath, Ireland. The owners planted hundreds of daffodil bulbs many years ago, and these bulbs have multiplied and taken over the edges of several meadows.

In this, they were continuing the tradition of previous owners, who had planted the first daffodils there, decades earlier.

We’ve learned that seikinsou writes a blog about the daffodil in haiku poetry.
europasaijiki.blogspot.com/2005/04/daffodil-and-narcissus.html

Here’s a haiku about the above-featured photograph (written by Isabelle Prondzynski):

daffodil –
the very first
of thousands

Anyone can contribute a daffodils haiku to the blog or to seikinsou’s photos – give it a try!  We’re going to write one (or thousands).

Frost in Nashville, Tennessee

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

02_23_09, originally uploaded by jcbonbon.

Photographer jcbonbon tells us about this February 23, 2009 photo: It was taken outside my front door at about 8 am one frosty morning in Nashville, Tennessee. The previous owner planted these bulbs, so I don’t know what kind of daffodil they are, but it’s a joy to walk out every morning and see their progress!

Of course, there was more than frost this past weekend. We checked with jcbonbon to see how the daffs are doing: I was out of town during the snowstorm, but when I returned, many daffodils had already opened with a bit of a temporary warm-up in the weather. Very pretty!
