Point Bonita and Golden Gate Daffodils

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Point Bonita – Spring for Golden Gate, originally uploaded by Camryn Brown.

The Photographer Camryn Brown tells us about this February 21, 2009 photograph: It was taken on the path to the Point Bonita Lighthouse in the Marin Headlands near San Francisco. If you follow the “map” link from the photo details, I have geo-tagged it fairly precisely. The satellite view shows more as the map is fairly blank right there.

The photo is taken looking back towards the Golden Gate Bridge. Because the foreground is in focus, the background is blurry but at the right side of the bridge you can just make out the shapes of some of the tall buildings in San Francisco. It was taken mid/late afternoon on Saturday which was one of the few good weather days in the Bay Area recently.

The photographer Webrarian tells us about this February 21, 2009 photo: It was taken in the Cornish town of Penzance which is about as far west as you can go in England without falling into the Atlantic Ocean.

It has a reputation for growing early daffodils because it is much milder there than other parts of the UK. The Cornish fields are full of two crops at the moment – daffodils and cauliflowers.

These were outside a house in Penzance itself.

Beacons of Spring in San Francisco, California

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Daffodils in San Fran, originally uploaded by kirstykat.

Photographer kirstykat tells us about this February 8, 2009 image: The photo was taken up on Coit Tower, in San Francisco. Daffodils are my favourite flower, and it was so lovely to see them, after having spent five months living in the desert in Arizona (no daffodils there!).

kirstykat has additional comment on the flickr post: Anybody who knows me, knows daffodils are my favourite flower, and a dollar bunch of them are truly, truly the way to my heart, yay!

It has been so surreal to see trees, and leaves, and flowers, and grass, and songbirds, and mushrooms and toadstools again, and to inhale the smell of earth and soil again, after four months of camping on red sand and grey, volcanic ash.

I think I’m a bit giddy from being back in a temperate climate again. I almost did backflips on Telegraph Hill when I came across these flowers! Awesometopia.

They are residual flowers from a 19th century homesite the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill is trying to save. A good way for us to identify historic areas where houses once stood is to look for beautiful daffodils. Flower can be historic tools.

Amasra is a 3 hour drive from Ankara (capital of Turkey). Fish is abundant and so very fresh! In fact, the daffodils were the centerpiece in a local fish restaurant. In the background is the sea and the bay, lovely view. Daffodils mean a lot to me, because they bloom in January, my birth month!

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Spring is coming!, originally uploaded by *Vindaloo*.

Photographer *Vindaloo* tells us: The photo was taken in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The daffodils were growing in a little pot at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, which is a city centre farm close to where I live. My husband and I had taken our daughter there for the afternoon, the daffs were growing just outside the cafe/shop area. The farm’s website is www.mvuf.org.uk.

Note from iSpring: We live in a city but were unaware of the urban farm movement exemplified by the Meanwood Valley Urban Farm. Good stuff! Here is a November 23, 2008 CBS report on urban farms, including (part of) the video news report and the complete transcript.

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Daffodils!, originally uploaded by tempichanges.

Photographer tempichanges tell us about this February 8, 2009 photo: I took this photo at Blarney Castle in Blarney, Ireland. They were the first I had seen pop up here in Ireland, but since I’ve taken a few photos here around Galway of the blooms that are coming out. It was quite a beautiful morning, if I can recall correctly, the sun had just come out after a good long rain, so the yellow of the blooms was even more vibrant.

California Dreamin’ in San Diego

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Daffodils, originally uploaded by Dan-oh.

Photographer Dan-oh tells us: The [February 14, 2009] photo is just from my front yard in San Diego. We have a spiral mass planted and they’ve been blooming for a week or so. We have an old lawn area that we are slowly turning into a ‘meadow’ area and the daffs add some seasonal color. It helps that we had 2 weeks of 80 deg weather – before we had to force the daffodils up.

We asked Dan-oh what he means by “We have a spiral mass planted”, and here is what he tells us: Fun stuff. The planting is just a bulk planting of bulbs is a spiral formation. We started in the center and then just spiraled out from there. It’s an interesting formation.

First Daffodils in Mariposa County, California

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Spring Flowers, originally uploaded by TheSheriffRocks.

Photographer Rachel Rosemire tells us: This is one of my favorites also. I have 4 daffodil photos in that same set and the details are as follows:

The photos were taken in my front yard, which is located near Lake Don Pedro in Mariposa County, California. The photos in that set were taken on February 12th, 2009, about 10 days after they first sprouted.

The only other photo I have is this one, which is literally the first one that sprouted on February 2, 2009. The bulbs were planted in late October. They were given to my mom over 20 years ago by an elderly Dutch man and have been replanted many times over the years and always successfully bloomed in January/February.
