Photographer basimmons posts this January 16, 2010 photo from Virginia! She says: I took the photo right outside the Viriginia home I was born and raised in. These daffodils are very close to the house so maybe somewhat protected. Maybe that’s why they come up early. They always come up before mine do only 5 miles away. Also, they are very old bulbs. The house is 53 years old. I doubt if the bulbs are quite that old but maybe close:)

Photographer emeraldspiryt tells us about this February 18, 2009 photo: It was taken in Richmond, Virginia. A late spring this year is holding the daffodils in bud longer than normal. This is the bud of a double daffodil. The bud has been on the plant for four weeks, though two heavy frosts and two light snows.

Photographer dusty_chenille tells us about this February 9, 2009 photo: I took this picture at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, Virginia, in early February. This one was the large-cupped narcissus “Pinza”… Such a beautiful deep yellow in the center.

The first daffodils in spring are such beacons of hope and happiness after the winter.

Through the remarkable macro lens comes this February 7, 2009 photo labeled “Rebirth”. Photographer emeraldspiryt tells us: This was taken in my back yard in Richmond, Virginia. It is the bud of one of my double daffodils. It survived snow and two heavy frosts. The anticipation of the bloom is as beautiful as the bloom itself.

The photographer genevieve-n has this to say about the new daffodil photo taken January 29, 2009, and we love the title “Peekaboo”: It was taken at my home in Yorktown, VA. We planted the bulbs a few years ago, and they have been doing wonderfully. They are some of the very few in our neighborhood, so when there is very little to no color around, it’s lovely to see their little yellow heads peeking out!

Looks like they grow them healthy, good-lookin’, and very early in Virginia, judging by this January 4, 2009 photo. We wrote to the photographer Larry Huffman to ask for details: Yep they’re in Great Falls, Va. I don’t know the variety, but I get them from White Flower Farm in CT, here is the product page (http://bit.ly/rcdO). These are bred for the south apparently. I actually saw some of them coming up in late November, they are on a southern slope and whenever the ground warms up I get some that pop up. I get blooms in early to mid-March and they usually last into late May but the heat kills them pretty quick. I leave the leaves up until late June even though they flop over; I’ve read that’s when they take up nutrients for the following year.

I’m adding a hundred or so every other year to the woods behind my house. I’ll post some pics later this year when they come it.
