First Daffodils on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

IMG_6230, originally uploaded by SweetMeow.

Photographer SweetMeow tells us about this February 10, 2010 image: I always watch for the first sprouting of daffodils. It’s a reminder that the season has turned a corner from winter to spring — that “new life” is returning! With this winter being colder than normal, we’re watching even more carefully for evidences that springtime is coming!

This particular daffodil sprout is from the same grouping of daffodils on Hilton Head Island, SC which I photographed last year at about this time. The interesting thing is how late they are this year as compared to last year. As I said – we’ve had a cold winter. Well — ok — it’s cold for HERE! The poor people in the US northeast do not relate to what the Hilton Head natives mean by “cold”. However, in my opinion, the more chilly weather has held back the daffodil sprouts for just under two weeks. My photo of last year was taken on January 28th. This photo was taken on February 10th, and the buds appear to be at about the same “stage”. I’ll be watching for when they finally bloom!

Here is First Daffodils blog post from last year, same daffodils! On that post, you can find a link to photos from 2007.

December Daffodils in South Carolina

Monday, December 28th, 2009

DSC_0356, originally uploaded by mogollon_1.

These South Carolina daffodils were photographed on December 27, 2009 by Photographer mogollon_1 who tells us: I took the daffodil pic today (12/27) at Magnolia Gardens near Charleston. It is one of the most beautiful places you can imagine. I go there often to walk and take pictures. Check my other Spring sets of Magnolia Gardens where I have many other daffodil pictures. The weather here recently has been very mild, hence the daffodils peeking out. Azaleas have also been blooming there.

Note from the editor: If you are hoping to see daffodils this spring, take a look at our resource listings of Daffodil Festivals, Fields, and Gardens here.

Photographer anoldent writes to us on March 8, 2009: It was taken at Brookgreen Gardens near Georgetown, SC. You’ll find a full description of the location if you click on my Brookgreen Gardens set on my photostream page. They had countless thousands of daffodils, of several different varieties blooming there last week .

They also have an excellent website, which may provide more info of interest to you.

The photo in this remarkable sculpture garden (and National Historic Landmark) was taken on February 26, 2009.

Snowy Daffodils in Greenville, South Carolina

3-2-09 – Park daffodils and snow, originally uploaded by jennymunro.

Photographer jennymunro tells us about this image: I took the picture in Falls Park in downtown Greenville, S.C. The park is built around the Reedy River and the falls, which are just yards off Main Street. The daffodils have been out for a couple of weeks. Then last week, we had snow on March 1. I took this picture on March 2, the next day, when the snow had melted some.

All I know about the daffodils is that they are planted by the city of Greenville, which operates the park. And they are always one of the first harbingers of spring for me. Since I work just a block from the park, I watch the flowers come and go.

Spring and winter – daffodils and snow. That’s what happens when seasons are about to change. And it happens often in the Southeast. Winter often doesn’t really show up until March or so.

Snowy daffodils in Anderson, South Carolina

Hanging its head, originally uploaded by froglover.1979.

Photographer froglover.1979 tells us this about this snow and daffodils photo: Taken in Anderson, SC USA. These daffodils have been blooming in my front yard for several years. On this day, March 1, we had a snow storm. These are quite rare in the south. We got 6 inches of snow in about a 15 hour period. My daffodils were quite droopy from the wet snow. Can’t tell you much about the variety.

First Daffodils in Hilton Head, South Carolina

IMG_4714, originally uploaded by SweetMeow.

We wrote to SweetMeow, asking for details about this January 28, 2009 image: This photo was taken in our yard – on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. I admit, I was rather surprised to see buds this early, because I’m used to these blooming during the month of March. We’ve had some cold weather which I’d think would stall the growth. But — maybe not….

I did not plant these, as they were planted a very long time ago by my mother in law when they owned the house where we are now. She died this year, and in my mind, it’s a tribute to her and her love of flowers.

I did go to your blog and it’s wonderful to read and see all the daffodils, some which were blooming in among the snow! With that in mind, maybe these daffodil buds truly are not early.

I have pictures of these same daffodils in bloom about 2 years ago on March 27, 2007. check out this set:

In particular, note picture #6735 as that is — I think — the same clump of daffodils. In that set there also are more close up shots of them.

First Daffodil in Spartanburg, South Carolina

First Daffodil! 1.24.09, originally uploaded by Bill’s_Eye_View.

This beauty was taken on January 24, 2009, by photographer William Smith. Here’s what Bill has to say about the image: This is the first of what will be many later on. The daffodils come up in my backyard every year. They grow close to the edge of the woods. They were not planted by anyone. They may have been in a load of fill dirt, or squirrels may have stashed the bulbs there while storing food for the winter, like they do pecans and acorns.

Last week we had 3″ of snow, and temps. in the teens. Today I walk out in my backyard and see this. Nature sure can be amazing!

Daffodil Bulb in Columbia, South Carolina

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Daffodil Bulb, originally uploaded by imayle.

This photo was taken on November 28, 2008. How beautiful is that? Curious what exactly a bulb is, we looked it up The Great Plant Escape (thanks, University of Illinois Extension Urban Programs Resource Network).

The photographer imayle tells us: It was taken in Columbia, SC in early december when I was potting up some daffodils that I picked up from walmart… I thought it looked so neat up close, so I took a picture of it. :) I got the variety pack, so I’m not sure exactly which specific type it is.
