Daffodil in Snow in Herefordshire, England

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Daffodil in snow, originally uploaded by oakjane.

This otherworldly photo titled “Daffodil in Snow” was taken on February 3, 2008. Photographer oakjane tells us: It was taken in my neighbour’s garden in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England. The image reminds me Spring is on its way. It feels very hopeful and positive – new life pushing through the snow. I got pretty wet lying in the snow to take it but it was worth it!

I walked round the same garden today 3 days later – the snow and the magic has gone. If I hadn’t been taking photos I’d have walked straight on by. Taking close ups of flowers is a gateway to another world – right on my doorstep – beauty at my feet, if only I stop and see.

Early Daffodils in Nottinghamshire, England

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

early daffodils, originally uploaded by potbic.

The photographer potbic tells us about this February 6, 2009 photo: Taken at Brackenhurst campus garden next to a pond. That’s just outside a town of Southwell in Nottinghamshire. The college is an agricultural college part of Nottingham Trent University. The daffodils could be native wild daffodils ( Narcissus pseudonarcissus ) there are some growing there but they could also be the garden cultivated variety which as you know there are hundreds. We have had a cold winter this year and a real snow for the first time in years and it is still snowing so I was surprised to see them trying to emerge. I will be keeping an eye on them to see if they fully flower or stay as they are.

Best Shot, 80 Miles North of London

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

springsign, originally uploaded by the tomahawk kid.

Photographer the tomahawk kid tells us: It was taken the evening before the snowstorm that seems to have hit most of the UK though I am about 80 miles north of London…I live right on the border of Norfolk & Suffolk and in fact those daffodil shoots are literally a handful of yards from the actual border – the nearest town is about a mile away and is called Diss…the daffodils come up every year in this place but are not in a garden but on wild ground.

This photo was taken on February 2, 2009.

The Promise of Spring in Greenwich Park, London

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

The Promise of Spring, originally uploaded by londonjoolz.

Photographer londonjoolz says about this snowy image entitled “The Promise of Spring”: Netting sectioning off area where Daffodil bulbs are planted in Greenwich Park.

This photo was taken on February 2, 2009.

We looked for Greenwich Park on the Royal Parks website. We envy these daffodils for their beautiful home, despite their current blanket of snow: Covering 74 hectares (183 acres), Greenwich is the oldest Royal Park and home to a small herd of Fallow and Red deer. Situated on top of a hill, visitors enjoy sweeping views across the River Thames to St Paul’s Cathedral and beyond.

Daffs Poking Out Near London

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Daffs poking out, originally uploaded by ciaranj75.

This February 2, 2009 photo was taken just after the big snowstorm in England. Here is what the photographer ciaranj75 says about the photo: It was taken in a place called Esher in England. It’s just outside London in the county of Surrey (photo should be geo-tagged on flickr): I took it as we’ve had the worst snow for 18 years in London today. I can’t remember what type of daffs they are – I bought the blbs a couple of years ago now and just leave them to do their thing every year!

Ciaran also blogs here about SEO, social media, web 2.0, and music. This is one of the most interesting blogs about new media we’ve seen, and Ciaran’s interesting, too.  Here is an archive of his recent writings at his digital marketing company Altogether Digital. We love the article about the Cadbury Eyebrows ad. Be sure to play the video.

Daffodils Sleeping in London

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

snow chaos in London, daffodils sleeping, originally uploaded by Sonti Malonti.

Photographer Sonti Malonti writes: It’s been quite mild here for the last two weeks but as of yesterday a cold front with lots of snowfall has thrown Great Britain “into chaos”, but the daffodils are fine.

They started thriving on 17th January.

And this morning they have been covered in 15cm of snow – and it’s still snowing. They are just ordinary daffodils from a local flowershop, I planted the budding bulbs early January.

Great Creations in Norwood, North Carolina

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

This seasonal image by photographer jackiesmith60 was taken on January 20, 2009. Here is what Jackie shares with us about the photo and daffodils: What I can share about it is – it was taken in Norwood, NC and we had just had our first little snow of about 4 inches. We hadn’t had snow since 2004 so what a delight to see some. Anyway, it only lasted the one day and as I was out and about snapping away as the snow was melting I found this little patch of daffodils poking their little heads out!! Really surprised me cause I hadn’t seen them earlier. I was pleased to see 2 reminders of our creators makings in one day!

Cold Daffodils in Carrboro, North Carolina

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

IMG_7309.JPG, originally uploaded by TEB471959.

We’re always intrigued by photos of snow and daffodils. Here is what photographer TEB471959 has to say about this January 21, 2009 photo: In Carrboro, North Carolina, a snow-less winter is not unusual, but last Tuesday, January 20th, we awoke to find about an inch (2.5 cm) on the ground. The daffodils took it in stride. I expect they will bloom toward the second half of February, along with the hellobores and the Siberian squill. The snowdrops are already in bloom. The tulips will be just a bit later. Spring is the best for gardening in North Carolina. The summers can get pretty hot, and sometimes pretty dry. We had a drought in 2007, as did most of the southeast, because no tropical storms came up the coast. Carrboro is near Chapel Hill, around the center on the state, in the “Research Triangle” area.

Inside Looking Out in Standish, Maine

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Daffodil, originally uploaded by sleepy pickle.

Another nice winter-spring composition from someone with a really cool brother. This photo was taken on January 5, 2009.

Photographer sleepy pickle sends along this note: I visited your blog, and I was amazed to see how many people have daffodils outside already! I live in Standish, Maine, so I am extremely jealous of anyone that has live plants outside this time of year.

As a garden junkie myself, I’ve been trying to pretend that it’s not winter. My brother bought me these little potted daffodils to help get me through until my bulbs come up outside in the spring.
