Photographer Talgit tells us about this December 30, 2010 image: I must admit I took the shot for no reason other than I felt it represented a promise of better things to come following a very cold period of weather. The shot is from a patch of our garden that is quite untended and bare; but every year in spring there is a display of daffs. They originate from many years back when my partner’s father bought the Cottage and prepared the garden.
I live in the UK, in the far South West County of Cornwall. We are 20 miles from Lands End and a short flight from the magical archipelago of islands called the Isles of Scilly. They are a major producer of Daffodils and Narsissi. We usually enjoy a mild but wet climate during the winter months. These past two winters however have seen temperatures as low as -8C, ice, hard frosts and light snow falls. Moderate compared to some areas of the UK and certainly by US standards.
It was a day or so after the frosts, ice and snow disappeared that I spotted these shoots and decided to make the shot. Cornwall is usually one of the earliest Counties in UK to harvest Daffodils before Christmas but this year the farmers crops failed due to the bad weather. Later in February or early March will be the most prolific time for the County fields, gardens and waysides to turn yellow. Maybe if these little babies mature to flowers I will post an update.
Hope this helps. With all best wishes for 2011 to Daffodil lovers in the USA from the UK.
