West Cornwall Winter Landscape: Daffodil Fields

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

West Cornwall Winter Landscape: Daffodil Fields, originally uploaded by Tim’sSeaGlimpses.

West Cornwall fields have daffodils! Tim’sSeaGlimpses comments about this January 14, 2012 image: “A really early season in west Cornwall so far this year. The far west of Cornwall has many tiny daffodil meadows/fields, many hidden away from roads. With a careful choice of varieties in our comparatively mild climate (compared to the rest of the UK), the season can run from mid-Dec to March.”

Daffodil Copse in South East Cornwall

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

Daffodil copse, originally uploaded by nickshepherd.

Photographer nickshepherd tells us about this March 23, 2011 image: Daffodils are regularly grown in South east Cornwall and I had watched this field begin to come to life a few weeks before I took the shot. Although the scale and colour of the daffodils is overwhelming, it does not always translate into a good photograph unless some form of focal point is available. Prior to taking the shot, I walked around the field and found some trees sitting on the horizon. With the ingredients in place, I took the shot the next day early in the morning when the light was softer. One thing that is “lost” in the shot was the wonderful scent from this particular species of daffodil…it was almost intoxicating!

West Cornwall Daffodils “Like a Painting”

005, originally uploaded by Cornish Cowboy.

Photographer Cornish Cowboy tells us about this February 26, 2011 image: Pictured at Cury Cross Lanes on The Lizard Peninsula another field of dancing daffodils in a spring breeze. West Cornwall is a tapestry of yellow at the moment, so many fields seem to be turned over to daffodils, it’s an amazing sight. Due in part perhaps to the fact that a number of farmers are having to sell unprofitable dairy herds and turn their attentions to more lucrative crops.

Have you seen this Cornwall field – at Tremough near Penryn Cornwall?

Photographer garykingphotography.com tells us about this March 15, 2011 image: The woodland carpet of daffodils was taken near to the south coast of Cornwall, southwest England. I wanted to add depth to the image by using the shadows to add contrast so I waited for the sun to start to go down.

Here is Gary King’s website.

Daffodils Forever in West Cornwall UK

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Marching Daffodils, originally uploaded by michael-1943.

Photographer michael-1943 tells us about this March 3, 2011 image: The location of this photo is a field on the south side of the Hayle estuary in West Cornwall the United Kingdom. In this part of the country, there are many fields of daffodils, as our climate is one of the mildest in the U K, and therefore we have an advantage in that our crops develop earlier than the rest of Northern Europe.

The daffodil is being cultivated for the plant’s bulb not the flower as it would have been picked when still in bud if that was the case.

Daffodils Ready for Harvest in Cornwall

Monday, February 28th, 2011

A Host of Golden Daffodils, originally uploaded by Cornish Cowboy.

Photographer Cornish Cowboy posts two photographs of the daffodil fields in mid-February 2011. The two fields have a different life experience. Here is what he tells us: The first photo is a crop that will be picked before the blooms develop, they can be shipped to distant destinations before they flower. By the time they reach the shops and the customer the blooms will just be flowering. The second picture shows a field where the crop has been allowed to flower in the field. This crop will not be picked as such until the flowers are wilting, it’s for the development of the bulbs and will help them to provide better flowers next year. Of course the sight of a complete field of beautiful yellow is a fabulous sight.

The second photo will be posted next and can be seen just above this image.

January daffs at the Eden Project

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

January daffs, originally uploaded by Webrarian.

Photographer Webrarian tells us about these sunny daffodils. Image taken on January 9, 2011. Cornwall’s Eden Project is built in the vast crater of a disused china clay mine. It’s now become a major tourist attraction but manages to preserve some botanic interest as well.

Being in the far south-west of England, spring comes early to Cornwall. It has a thriving daffodil industry which supplies shops across the UK with early daffs.

But these January daffs at Eden aren’t grown for sale, but to be admired as one of the first signs that spring is just around the corner.

Daffodil Field in West Cornwall, England

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Daffodil Field, originally uploaded by Tim’sSeaGlimpses.

Photographer Tim’sSeaGlimpses tells us about this January 20, 2011 image: A wet autumn followed by a long, bitterly cold winter (so far) in west Cornwall has made this the latest daffodil season since we have lived here (we have always had daffodils flowering before Christmas until now!).

Promise of Spring in Cornwall, UK

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Promise of Spring, originally uploaded by Talgit.

Photographer Talgit tells us about this December 30, 2010 image: I must admit I took the shot for no reason other than I felt it represented a promise of better things to come following a very cold period of weather. The shot is from a patch of our garden that is quite untended and bare; but every year in spring there is a display of daffs. They originate from many years back when my partner’s father bought the Cottage and prepared the garden.

I live in the UK, in the far South West County of Cornwall. We are 20 miles from Lands End and a short flight from the magical archipelago of islands called the Isles of Scilly. They are a major producer of Daffodils and Narsissi. We usually enjoy a mild but wet climate during the winter months. These past two winters however have seen temperatures as low as -8C, ice, hard frosts and light snow falls. Moderate compared to some areas of the UK and certainly by US standards.

It was a day or so after the frosts, ice and snow disappeared that I spotted these shoots and decided to make the shot. Cornwall is usually one of the earliest Counties in UK to harvest Daffodils before Christmas but this year the farmers crops failed due to the bad weather. Later in February or early March will be the most prolific time for the County fields, gardens and waysides to turn yellow. Maybe if these little babies mature to flowers I will post an update.

Hope this helps. With all best wishes for 2011 to Daffodil lovers in the USA from the UK.

Muffins and Daffs in Falmouth, Cornwall, England

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Muffins and Daffs, originally uploaded by Squidge:).

We do not include indoor compositions very often, but this delicious photo caught our eye, er stomach. We love the yellow of the corn muffins, foretelling the yellow of the daffodils still to bloom.

Photographer Squidge:) tells us about this image, taken on March 11, 2010: The photo was taken in my kitchen in Falmouth, Cornwall, England. It was my day off and I’d spent the day doing some shopping and lots of cooking including the sweetcorn muffins that are also in the shot. Daffodils are late coming in England this year because it’s been so cold but luckily for me Cornwall is warmer than the rest of the country so our daffs are out now :)

On the flickr page, Squidge:) says: Couldn’t resist buying some daffodils today… it’s been so sunny this week, feels like spring is here at last!

ky1dog also took a second image in Cornwall which you can see at here. ky1dog tells us the story of this March 21, 2010 image: Photo was taken at a local gardens called Trengwainton in a village called Madron in Cornwall UK. There are a lot of sub tropical trees and plants grown at this centre due to the mild climate in this area. The gardens are part of the National Trust and are spread over approx 25 acres.

Daffodils Open in Cornwall

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Field of Daffodils 2, originally uploaded by Tim’sSeaGlimpses.

Photographer Tim’sSeaGlimpses tells us about this February 14, 2010 image: The far west of Cornwall has many tiny daffodil meadows/fields, many hidden away from roads. With a careful choice of varieties in our comparatively mild climate (compared to the rest of the UK) the season can run from mid-Dec to March.

The comment on the flickr page: Daffodils brighten up a grey February morning, but these flowers have already opened too far for picking to send to market.

You can see additional images of these fields and elsewhere on Tim’sSeaGlimpses Daffodils set.
