Daffodil Days at Ironstone in Murphys, California

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Daffodil Days at Ironstone in Murphys,CA, originally uploaded by Luvin’ the light.

Photographer Luvin’ the light tells us about this February 28, 2010 image: The little town called Murphys is in the California Sierra Nevada Foothills, famous for the California Gold Rush. The Ironstone Winery, in Murphys, holds a festival every March called Daffodil Days. They have thousands of daffodils planted on the grounds, some lovely displays in pots and a Daffodil plant show and contest.

It’s a big event and people come from all over Northern California to visit it every year.

Note from the editor: See information about the Ironstone Daffodil Days March 12 – 14, 2010 here. The American Daffodil Society National Show and Convention is being held at Ironstone this year from March 11 – 14, 2010.

Daffodils and Redwoods near Eureka, California

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Daffodils and Redwoods., originally uploaded by Einsteinophile.

Photographer Einsteinophile tells us about this March 10, 2010 image of foggy daffodils: The picture was taken at the main campus of College of the Redwoods, a community college district that serves Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte counties in Northern California. This one is located just south of Eureka, CA. Daffodils grow like crazy here! The school and a lot of other places are just covered with them this time of year. It really does a lot to brighten things up, because we are right on the ocean, and so we don’t get to see the sun much from October until about July. I took this photo when I realized that you could see the redwoods and the fog coming off of them, and thought the dark background would make a great contrast to the bright yellow flowers.

Earthy’s New Teeth in Clovis, California نرجس حديقتي

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Earthy’s new teeth 2 – Daffodils نرجس حديقتي, originally uploaded by Laila Neihoum.

Photographer Laila Neihoum tells us about these December 1, 2009 little ones: First daffs in my garden. Back home we have Narcissus waterlily type it grows in the Green Mountain, we bought some and cultivated them in my parents’ garden for years , I wish I could find some here in USA!

To see what a few of these have become, here are the March 3, 2010 images!

Salome Narcissus
King Alfred Daffodil

Laila comments about the March 3 blossoms in the links above: I have planted many daffodils in my back yard garden in Clovis, California. They seem to like the place and the rich soil of San Joaquin Valley. These three here are in full bloom, tall and big flowers. Still to bloom – later in mid spring – are my best daffodils: “Cheerfulness” which, according to pictures seemed like my Green Mountain native daffodil back home, Libya ! Oh! I wish they have the same fragrance!

Daffodils and Cows in Northern California

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Daffodils for the, originally uploaded by ParkerJones Family.

Photographer ParkerJones Family tells us about this February 21, 2010 image: I originally posted these pictures on our blog
imustbefull.com/2010/02/daffodils-along-my-ride-and-a-woodsworth-poem-from-1804/

I took the pictures of the daffodils on my Sunday morning bike ride through the farmlands along the ocean in Arcata, Ca. (far Northern California). The pictures with the cows…I believe the field was originally planted by the Sun Valley Bulb Farm, and is now inhabited by cows. The daffodils near the chain link fence are along US Highway 101, and I am wondering if they were part of a bulb farm taken over by the highway system.

daffd0237, originally uploaded by whitelakelee.

Point Bonita Daffodils in Golden Gate National Recreational Area, California

daffodils?, originally uploaded by Jef Poskanzer.

Photographer Jef Poskanzer tells us about this February 13, 2010 image: The daffs are near the Point Bonita lighthouse, across the Golden Gate from San Francisco. I believe they escaped from the lighthouse keeper’s garden a long time ago and are now feral.

Here is information about Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Daffodils and Horses at UC Davis

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Daffodils and horses, originally uploaded by Sam Schmidt.

Photographer Sam Schmidt tells us about this February 18, 2010 photo: I took a walk south of the UC Davis campus, and not far from the Mondavi Center and teaching vineyard when I saw a field with a bunch of daffodils and rosemary bushes (Robert Mondavi gave a ton of money to UC Davis for a food and wine program before he died, the vineyard is just now coming in, and you can see the vine supports in the background of some of the pictures.). The horses in the background are there because this field is located between the Mondavi center and the Equestrian center just south of the campus. While I took these pictures yesterday (the 18th), I’ve seen daffodils in bloom for at least the last two weeks around town. I wanted to make sure to shoot this field of them before they started to wilt.

You can see more daffodil photos from the same period of time in Sam Schmidt’s Early Spring set.

First Daffodils in San Francisco

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Daffodils, originally uploaded by Graham Gibson.

Photographer Graham Gibson tells us about this January 22, 2010 image: I took the photo of these daffodils on the morning of January 22nd on my way to work. It’s been raining all week here in San Francisco, but it had stopped briefly so I took a quick detour through Yerba Buena Gardens for a few photos. The surroundings were very dark and wet, so this row of flowers stood out in contrast.

First Daffodils in San Jose, California

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

January 6, 2010 – Daffodils!, originally uploaded by Jan Herbert.

Photographer Jan Herbert has captured this January 6, 2010 image of daffodils in San Jose, California.

She comments on the flickr page: I noticed these coming up back on New Years Day & was reminded last night that I forgot to take a shot… Mission accomplished. From my front garden. Every year these are coming up earlier & earlier. I’m wondering if they’ll be up in time for Christmas this year…

You can see early daffodils in the same garden in 2009 – posted on this blog on January 23, 2009. Nice tradition!

Note from the editor: If you are hoping to see daffodils this spring, take a look at our resource listings of Daffodil Festivals, Fields, and Gardens here.

Daffodil Meadow at Filoli

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Mar 2009 Filoli_0763, originally uploaded by thomas alan.

Photographer thomas alan tells us about this sweet March 15, 2009 image and some Filoli lore we’re glad to know: The photo is taken at Filoli Estate and Gardens in Woodside California. Filoli is an abreviation for Fight, Love, and Live. The estate was built by a man who made a fortune in the California Gold Rush. Admission is $12. Almost every day is open from 10AM to 2PM. Daffodil season will end in about a week or two. I saw many tulips that will open after then. The website actually indicates what is currently flowering. The lower hedge in the background is a flowering blue rosemary and the trees in the background are California Live Oaks. My own blue hyacinth are in their peak and my daffodils started last week. It is a real thrill to stand in a field of daffodils. God smiles on a civilization so peaceful that it can plant a field of daffodils.

Daffodils in Pt. Reyes, California

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

daff1, originally uploaded by ChrisA Imaginoir.

Photographer ChrisA Imaginoir tells us: The photo was taken on Mar 10, 2009 in a relatively wild area of Pt Reyes National Seashore in Northern California. I have no idea when the daffodils were first introduced to this meadow, but they’ve been growing and spreading among the native grasses and shrubs for decades.

There are now thousands of daffodils, both yellow and white, blooming for a few weeks in the spring every year. They are completely hidden from regular trails and you have to make your way though brush and across a creek to get to them, but they’re very popular with the locals who know the way…

Daffodils at Filoli, Woodside, California

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

65/365: Mar 6, A Spring Path, originally uploaded by mother holda.

Photographer mother holda tells us about this March 6 photograph: The Daffodils are from Filoli Gardens in Woodside, CA. It’s such a easy place to get good photos. :) Although there wasn’t too much in bloom. I bet by the end of the month it will be busting out all over!

Daffodils at Filoli, Woodside, California

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

DSC_0169, originally uploaded by oktronic.

Photographer oktronic tells us about this February 28, 2009 photo: The picture was taken at Filoli, which is at 86 Cañada Road, Woodside, California. Their web is www.filoli.org/. They have a “daffodil meadow” that is starting to bloom with a wide range of colorful daffodils.

Oktronic’s photostream has many recent photos of Filoli 2009, including several more daffodils photos. We couldn’t decide which to post, so we closed our eyes and clicked.

Daffodils on the Mendocino Coast

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

Daffodils at the Coast, originally uploaded by John F. Hughes.

Photographer John F. Hughes tells us about this perfect Northern California day: The photo was taken on the Mendocino Coast, 12 miles north of the town of Mendocino, about 175 miles North of San Francisco. The daffodils are on a cliff top, near the Pacific Star Winery. The day that the photo was taken, February 25, 2009, was wet and windy – very typical for this time of year and this location. Immediately behind the daffodils in the photo, the cliff drops nearly 100 feet into the Pacific Ocean. This is a tough environment for daffodils, but these little guys were up to the challenge. They look like they are huddling together against the stormy weather.

We’re always partial to photos of daffodils and ocean, the wilder the better.

Point Bonita and Golden Gate Daffodils

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Point Bonita – Spring for Golden Gate, originally uploaded by Camryn Brown.

The Photographer Camryn Brown tells us about this February 21, 2009 photograph: It was taken on the path to the Point Bonita Lighthouse in the Marin Headlands near San Francisco. If you follow the “map” link from the photo details, I have geo-tagged it fairly precisely. The satellite view shows more as the map is fairly blank right there.

The photo is taken looking back towards the Golden Gate Bridge. Because the foreground is in focus, the background is blurry but at the right side of the bridge you can just make out the shapes of some of the tall buildings in San Francisco. It was taken mid/late afternoon on Saturday which was one of the few good weather days in the Bay Area recently.

Beacons of Spring in San Francisco, California

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Daffodils in San Fran, originally uploaded by kirstykat.

Photographer kirstykat tells us about this February 8, 2009 image: The photo was taken up on Coit Tower, in San Francisco. Daffodils are my favourite flower, and it was so lovely to see them, after having spent five months living in the desert in Arizona (no daffodils there!).

kirstykat has additional comment on the flickr post: Anybody who knows me, knows daffodils are my favourite flower, and a dollar bunch of them are truly, truly the way to my heart, yay!

It has been so surreal to see trees, and leaves, and flowers, and grass, and songbirds, and mushrooms and toadstools again, and to inhale the smell of earth and soil again, after four months of camping on red sand and grey, volcanic ash.

I think I’m a bit giddy from being back in a temperate climate again. I almost did backflips on Telegraph Hill when I came across these flowers! Awesometopia.

California Dreamin’ in San Diego

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Daffodils, originally uploaded by Dan-oh.

Photographer Dan-oh tells us: The [February 14, 2009] photo is just from my front yard in San Diego. We have a spiral mass planted and they’ve been blooming for a week or so. We have an old lawn area that we are slowly turning into a ‘meadow’ area and the daffs add some seasonal color. It helps that we had 2 weeks of 80 deg weather – before we had to force the daffodils up.

We asked Dan-oh what he means by “We have a spiral mass planted”, and here is what he tells us: Fun stuff. The planting is just a bulk planting of bulbs is a spiral formation. We started in the center and then just spiraled out from there. It’s an interesting formation.

First Daffodils in Mariposa County, California

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Spring Flowers, originally uploaded by TheSheriffRocks.

Photographer Rachel Rosemire tells us: This is one of my favorites also. I have 4 daffodil photos in that same set and the details are as follows:

The photos were taken in my front yard, which is located near Lake Don Pedro in Mariposa County, California. The photos in that set were taken on February 12th, 2009, about 10 days after they first sprouted.

The only other photo I have is this one, which is literally the first one that sprouted on February 2, 2009. The bulbs were planted in late October. They were given to my mom over 20 years ago by an elderly Dutch man and have been replanted many times over the years and always successfully bloomed in January/February.
